Prague Mint

Prague Mint in Municipal house, Prague
Minting has always belonged to very important branches of production in the Czech country. The entitlement of coin minting belonged to the sovereign, that is why the first metal coin appeared in Prague, the town of Bohemian dukes, later kings. The oldest Czech means of payment were denars, the production of which goes back to the second half of the eighth century. The mission of the current Prague mint plc. is a restoration and a further development of this thousand years old tradition of a Czech coin minted in Prague.

Although the Prague tradition of coining is older than that of Vienna, Prague, this beautiful and admired city has not had the luck of an uninterrupted minting. For the last time, the activity of the mint in Prague was interrupted in 1856, after which the production of coins was concentrated in Vienna under the reign of the Habsburgs.

Prague mint plc. has a residence in the Municipal house in the square Náměstí republiky in Prague currently. The contemporary mint of Prague has become the youngest European mint and apparently also the world´s youngest mint at all.

Hence the traditional royal craft hence is coming alive in the workshops of the Prague mint again. In ateliers of sculptors preparing fascinating designs for the Prague mint, the new era of the Czech minting is being created. Our production is not large, but it has found its fans in Asia, Arabia and America fast. Coins and medaillons issued here have an extraordinary artistic value.

Our objective is creating of excellent, unique works of art. We place a special emphasis not only on a design manufacturing of our medals, an artistic and original performance, but especially on the precise work of engravers at the stage of preparation of dies. Therefore, we cooperate with the most significant sculptors and metalsmiths. Our capability of application of miscellaneous styles of art is ensured by our cooperation with fifty renowned and experienced Czech medallists. Of great importance to us is also our cooperation with students of the Secondary school of decorative arts and the Higher specialist school in Jablonec nad Nisou, which as one few medallist schools in Europe educates new generations of artists working in the branch minted coin and medal.

Starting with the primary sketch, followed with a preparation of plaster models till a careful engraving of all even the smallest details into a die, we apply traditional hundres of years-proven work procedures. We keep improving these work procedures all the time. At the mintage itself, we use all findings of the modern science. For processing of dies we use computer-controlled milling machines or a laser ray, for polishing into a mirror lustre we apply special little diamond grains of the size tenths of micron. The quench tempering of dies takes place in a vacuum. Our effort is that each single coin issued from our dies is perfect and unique in all aspects.

This is also the reason, why we prefer minting from precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. For the mintage we always choose just the materials of the highest possible purity indicated as the fineness 999 at the minimum. Medals are often minted to a limited issue of pieces and they are accompanyed with a certificated of authenticity. The most precious issues are numbered on the rim morover.

The thematic plan of the Prague mint is based on significant moments of the history of the Czech country, the Czech monarchs and the nation, personalities of the Czech culture and events of the European and world importance. As a country at the heart of Europe, pervaded with thousands of years of history of many famous empires, the country, where from everlasting various cultures were meeting and blending, we do have something to say!

We are proud that the quality of our work is ispiring for others and we appreciate very much the trust of our customers, who have entrusted us with the realisation of their own coins a medaillons.

On this web-site you can evaluate yourselves the results of our work.
